Made in Italy of nickel silver, it comes on a 24″ continuous stainless steel neck chain. This is the perfect length because it’s easy to slip on and off over your head without any clasp to worry about. Fits over most size heads. Comes gift boxed and with a Blessed Father Michael McGivney prayer card, plus a gift bag and tissue paper for gifting. We also include a couple of other saints cards that are important to the Knights. Michael McGivney was born in 1852 to Irish immigrant parents. He was the eldest of 13 children, 6 of whom died in infancy or childhood. He left school at age 13 to work to help support his family. At age 16 he began his priestly education, studying at seminaries in Quebec, Montreal (Canada) and Niagara Falls, NY. He left off his education to return home to raise his siblings after the death of his father. He later resumed his studies at seminary in Baltimore, MD and was finally ordained a priest in 1877. In 1882, while an assistant pastor in Connecticut, he founded the Knights of Columbus, with a small group of parishioners. Father McGivney was well aware of the difficulties of Catholic immigrants in assimilating into the American culture, and of their difficulties when the father and breadwinner of the family died. The KOC was originally set up as a mutual aid society, to provide assistance to widows and orphans in the event of the men’s deaths. It has grown to become the largest fraternal Catholic organization in the world, with 2 million of member families who donate hundreds of millions of dollars and put in millions of man-hours of charity work each year. We Catholics are proud of our Knights who are present in most parishes in the USA.Father Michael McGivney was also well known for his tireless work among his parishioners. He died at the age of 38 of pneumonia in 1890. He was declared “venerable” in 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI, citing his life of “heroic virtue”. A miracle in 2015 – an unborn child was miraculously cured of a fatal condition – fetal hydrops – after the family and their extended Catholic “family” prayed to Fr McGivney. It was approved in 2020 by the Vatican and Pope Francis approved Fr McGivney’s beatification which was held in October of 2020. A second miracle would result in his canonization.The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a “greeting card” program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 “pages” and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion.
